Pulling the motor

hey guys,

Anyone have tips or advice as to pulling a merc 7.4 out of a 01 z252? The motor started dumping oil out of the exhaust. Hoping at worst case its just a ring. I have a shop to do it in with a lift but not sure if i can get this motor to clear the boat with the lift alone. I did a search and didnt find much luck.

Thanks

The rear seat needs to be removed, it's incredibly heavy and will probably need to be hoisted out as well. It's held in by the hinges on the floor. I've attached a photo of how mine was removed. You'll also need to remove the carpeted engine panels, which are easy. They unscrew at top, and just sit inside a plastic track mounted to the floor.

There is a molded fiberglass lip that somewhat complicates things. It's shown in the first photo attached. The motor needs to be unbolted from the mounts, hoisted slowly and moved out of the way of that lip.

The last pic is of the area with the engine removed.

Good luck with it!! :wink_thumbup:

Wow, the bildge on your Z250 sure is finished a lot nicer than the one on my MX-19 was.

Seriously, Chris, how do you manage to keep your bilge clean like that? Or did you clean it after you pulled the engine out?

they cleaned it for me as part of that service :)

But I do use some bilge cleaner a few times a year. It's a liquid concentrate cleaner you dump in there with about 5-10 gallons of water and let it slosh around and then pump it or drain the bilge. Keeps it pretty clean too.

ShabahZ250,

Did they leave the outdrive in place? Thanks for the info guys

Re: Pulling the motor

outdrive was removed, but that's because the repair required it.
