Shifter question

Would anybody know the part number of the old Commander 3000 shifter used on a 95 Talari, 7.4L BIII ? I may need a new shifter this year (very hard to shift new, all new cables). I know that these are NLA but there's one NOS on Ebay that I may get.

Jay,
FYI we had our 3000 fail on us last year and almost went the same route versus changing the cables and all of the extra work required to go with the new 4000. However, the thought that our controller failed really without warning plus all of the additional complaints on the internet. We decide to go with a new 4000 we really love the look and was a pretty easy install... Hope this helps?

What have you decided to do with your shifter? Mine has some negative qualities now too and wonder if I should look at an upgrade before it becomes mandatory.

Just wondering how it went.

The marina in Wis. will check it out in spring before I pick it up. I need a quote before deciding. Anything over $400 may push me to the Livorsi.

How easy was the install? What year and model is your boat and can you tell me exactly what you had to do. I know the cables will have to be replaced but what else will have to be done. Is there such thing as a generic type universal that will go with the already existing cables and such. Just trying to get out for the last 4 weeks. Have been down all summer.

Yes they have some really nice generic/universal shifters. However, for the fifty dollar savings I didn't want to be a guinea pig.
So for the 4000 obviously remove the shifter unit and old shifter cables (normally 7/16") that was pretty easy. Remove the handle and that allows you to remove the cover over the mounting bolts. The only modification I did was I had to drill one new hole in plywood (I wanted a stiffer mounting bracket then what was previously used). In all it took around two hours and is pretty easy to do.. just take your time mark or take a quick snapshot with a camera and you'll be ok. Oh, the center button that you push in for throttle simply can pop out to reveal a bolt that you loosen so you'll need a socket set with extension for that.
Product plug check great lakes skipper for the shifter and new cables.

Sry for typos. sent from my cell.

Thanks Doug! I went to the site and found a Mercury 4000 new for $291.00. I think between my son and I we can figure it out but it's the cables I'm worried about running. It also says it will require gen.II cables and I'm not sure if my boat is the Alpha one 5.7 gen. II. My manual doesn't specify which one it is, it just say's it's for both. It is a '97 Shabbah. Well, that will be my next question. I have found out so much on here just reading and posting questions. My boat mechanic was quoting me about $1000.00 for this. Thanks, I appreciate the help!
