Not getting my power

I've got a 5.7L V-8 Mercrusier in my Talari 211. I took it out yesterday and it seemed to be running great, however, I wasn't getting the horsepower that it was putting out last weekend.
All guages were where they're supposed to be, however, the speedometer wasn't working for some reason or another. After a couple hours of having it full throttle and going 30mph tops, it finally kicked in and I started flying. If I throttled down, same old story. I was told that it could be that I need to put in a good fuel injector cleaner the next time I fill up the tank.
If anyone has advice as to what the issue might be with the lack of power and/or what the deal with the speedometer is, I would much appreciate it. Thanks a lot, Happy Labor Day.

Hi sweetness34,

Does it seem or smell like your motor is running rich at any time? Now a can of injector cleaner wont hurt and it's cheap so give it a shot and if it works, great, if not, you haven't spent a ton of money and we move on... I myself, don't think it's the injectors as normally they would cause your motor to run rough and not act like 2/3 power. It almost sound like the fuel pressure (change the filter lately?) or possibly throttle body or O2 sensor if its got one or the darn ignition system..... yup, there's a lot to deal with on computerized motors. Another thing, have you checked the system to see if there are any error codes that may help isolate the problem?

For the speedo issue, read this thread, everything you need is posted or linked in there, click here. (now it referrers to the Bravo series but the speedo pickup on the Gen II Alphas are similar).

Good luck,
WetWilly

Having been a member of this forum for over a year now, I've found that WetWilly is spot-on with his comments. I had a problem similar to that on a 5.0 Mercruiser on a previous boat. Changing the fuel filters and spraying out the carb made a world of difference.

Good luck!

Re: Not getting my power

Thanks for all the tips fellas. I cleaned the carb, swapped the filter and dropped in some fuel injector cleaner. We'll find out this weekend if it all worked. I appreciate all the tips. I also shot some air into the speedo tube to try and clean it out, so we'll see if I get any readings when I take her out. Thanks again for the help.
