Mercruiser 5.7L cutting out.

Posting in case anybody else has this problem. I could tell the story of everyone having an opinion, and me spending $945 on parts but will only do so if requested.
Engine would start and idle fine. Increased RPM's would eventually cause it to sputter, and sometimes die out. After replacing almost everything in the ignition system, I read on here that I should run a fuel line in a separate tank. It ran perfect like that.
Turns out the elbow on the top of the fuel tank where the fuel line connects was full of what I will call stuff. Looked like bits of leaves and old grass?
Now if I can just find that elbow as it snapped in half trying to loosen it.
Just thought I'd contribute as I get a lot of useful information from this site.
