Default Starter solenoid question

I have a 1995 202 Shabah with the 4.3LX engine that I bought in March of this year. All year, it has been having an intermittent no start problem, where it just clicks like a bad solenoid. It may or may not do it, with no apparent reason. I may turn the key and it turns over fine one time, the next time, it may "click" for 3 attempts, and then turn over fine on the next turn of the key. I was under the impression that when a solenoid went - it went. This has been going on for several months, and hasn't gotten worse (or better). Do you thing it is a bad solenoid that's hanging on, or should I be looking elsewhere?

You may have a poor ground on the slave solenoid which can be an easy fix and it may also be a dead spot in the starter windings which will mean its time to repair or replace.

Have a look thru this 'Troubleshooting your Starting System" and see if it helps you out.

I had the exact same problem in an old Triumph TR7, I know I'm talking about a car but it was a bad ignition switch and the switch on that car was just as basic as one on your boat

Agreed. There are so many little things that can cause this issue (particularly when it is intermittent) that its best to follow the troubleshooter and work your way down the line to the problem.
