Alarm

Took my new to me 2001 Mariah Diablo to the lake yesterday. All was well to start out but about 30 min out an audible alarm can on. It was intermittent at first then slowly increased to a solid alarm. Oil pressure was good and engine temp good also. Shut down for about an hour but as soon as I started back up the alarm was still solid. Any ideas on what faults can set the alarm off

Re: Alarm

Check the outdrive reservoir, low oil level there will sound an alarm.

Pretty much anything. Mine sounded when I had a bad alternator

Re: Alarm

David,

I had a similar random problem with my 99 Z222 7.4 MPI. Constant alarm and it felt like it was misfiring. Some trips no issues others I was afraid to WOT. Mine would beep over 3k mostly in rougher water. when I throttled back the beep and missing would stop. Couldn't match the beeps to any beep codes listed in the sticky post.Took me two seasons to figure it out. Went through entire ignition system, new plugs, wires, rotor, cap, and even did the coil. I figured cheaper to through parts at it then pay a marine mechanic, plus some of those items needed changing anyway. My boat has the MEPI-3 system and no codes found in ECU check after just about every trip. Put a new ignition switch in, no help :(. Checked the outdrive oil reservoir sensor,(easy to do disconnect one of the two wire connections under the bottle), and changed the fuel filter. Motor never ran hot, always checked the oil level prior a trip. Some threads I was reading had me looking at knock sensors (which I ruled out cause no codes in engine ECU) Finally 2 weeks ago on a really windy and choppy day it started happening at lower RPMS and I realized when I would pound on the side fiberglass panel next to the throttle I could make it happen. BINGO!!! Pulled into a cove and pulled off the throttle assembly and the family went for a little swim. Stuck my hand back in there and found about 10 feet of excess wire running on the floor from the throttle's on/off switch that went over to the ignition switch on the dash. To my surprise the one of the two wires was pinched between the boat deck and bottom of the side panel and both has some pretty ugly looking spade connections inline. Grabbed my trusty wire nippers cut out about a foot of area in question, taped it back up and zipped tied the wires so they didn't lay of the deck floor any more. One of the two wires even had another buzzer inline separate from the alarm one under the dash. I guess it is the one that beeps when you turn on the key. I always assumed it was the one under the dash that beeped. We just came back from a Labor extended weekend trip to Lake Powell and everything ran great!!!! 10 hours on the motor and no beeps or sputtering. Ran like a champ the entire trip.

Hope this helps you out.

Tom
