Blown motor
 

Our first weekend with out 2001 Jubilee ended badly.

First the oil pressure sensor was malfunctioning, or so we thought. We bypassed it because the temperature gauge did not show that the engine was hot. We took the kids for a ride and the boat made a horrible noise and a piece of the housing unit came off while we were riding. We got towed in and once we got the boat out of the water, oil came out of the boat. The housing unit and everything that is sticking out of the boat needs replaced. We haven't gotten a mechanic to look at it yet but we are taking it soon. Do you think the whole motor is blown and messed up the entire housing unit on the back? Is that possible? Also what do you guys think of after market parts?

Last question: does anyone know what all the switches are on the dash. Specifically the far right top one?

Sorry to hear about the rough end to the weekend. We're going to need a bit more info to help you figure out what actually happened.

When you say "housing unit", are you talking about the outdrive (the big black thing on the outside rear of the boat that the prop is bolted to)!?

"Oil came out of the boat"... So was the oil coming out after you pulled the plug to drain the bilge, or are you saying the outdrive cracked/broke and oil was draining from it? There is a big difference.

For your switch question, I can check mine tonight to see what the switch furthest to the right operates. I think courtesy lights and docking lights are on that side, but have to look to be sure. Which model do you have? If you have a Z??? then my switches probably won't be the same as yours. I have a 214.

Yes. It is being held to the boat with bungee cords.

The outdrive cracked and oil was coming from it. No drain plug was pulled.

Bummer. Sounds like a mess. Did you possibly hit something in the water?

If there's good news here, it's that your motor is more than likely not blown. Drives are cheaper than motors, so with any luck, you'll only be shelling out money for the drive unit.

Your engine and outdrive are two completely separate units. You have gear oil in your outdrive, and you have motor oil in your engine. The two don't mix. The oil you saw draining from the cracked outdrive would have been gear oil. If a gear or bearing broke apart in your drive and locked up the drive, your motor would likely have stalled, but in the process of the drive locking up, the gear or bearing can easily break the drive housing.

The first thing the mechanic will do is remove the outdrive and determine if the motor still spins independent of the drive.

The order of the switches on the Jubilee are:
Top row, left of steering
Nav lights, depth finder, courtesy lights

Top row, right of steering
storage lights, bilge, docking lights

Bottom row, left of key
horn, blower
