The lowdown on octain and Ethanol for your Merc
 
Hello everyone,

Over the months, the topic of what type of gas to use and what about ethanol keep coming up so I thought I would try to dispel any myths and/or questions and bring you the information straight from the “horses” mouth (that’s Mercruiser, not mine…).

I spoke with Mercruiser Service and the bottom line is, they designed their engines to run on 87 octane and with up to 10% ethanol, but you can use up to 91 octane if 87 causes any pinging. Any higher octane is not recommended unless you have a specific engine designed for it.
