alpha one noise
I recently had the upper and lower parts of the alpha one outdrive replaced on my 1998 shabah. The first time I put it back in the water I was very disappointed to hear a loud whining noise when I put the boat in forward gear. I asked the dealer about it and he wondered if maybe it was the gimble bearing. When I took the boat in to be repaired it wasn't making the noise. The shop rates are outrageous so i was hoping to try and do it myself from now on. Any Ideas.......

Re: alpha one noise
Does it happen to be an aftermarket drive or is it a Merc?

Re: alpha one noise
Being a gear whine, I would question whether they lined it up properly. I also wouldn't dig into it myself just yet... see if they will check the drive alignment since they were the ones who worked on it.
If they won't, and its not so loud as to think something's wrong, it may be okay. Almost every boat I've been in has at least a little whine. Oh wait, that could have just been my wife!! |
Re: alpha one noise
Yes its a aftermarket drive, it was half the price and the same warranty.

Re: alpha one noise
I was curious to hear the brand name because I have specifically read that SEI drives are loud during break-in.
