Thanks Guys, I appreciate the feedback. I guess I'll try the commercial detergent method. I'm somewhat afraid of the acid. I guess a good looking trailer is not near as important as a good looking boat. Sounds like I have some plans for the weekend, weather permitting.

careful with the detergent around your boat hull too. Id float the boat for the weekend and work on the trailer by its self

The galvanised finish doesn't look pretty but provides ionic protection from corrosion. Essential for salt water, but still useful in fresh water. I wouldn't touch it.
