Tilt/trim eyesore.
2 Attachment(s)
So after much procrastination I finally got tired of looking at an eyesore in the engine compartment namely being my tilt trim motor. The bracket had totally rusted away and causing the unit to not be secured anymore. After I removed the base plate to clean it, I discovered that it was full of water. Should this be normal? I can say that it could be from when I washed the interior down last year but not sure. I ordered a new stainless steel bracket and wil clean up the connections. Looks to be an easy fix but would like to know if anybody has had any problems that I should be aware of.
Thanks in advance. |
Re: Tilt/trim eyesore.
Yours is mounted differently than mine is so i cant be sure where the water might be coming from. I would guess though that rain water etc is likely working its way into the area but you could be right about the wash down. Is there any way of drilling a hole so that it drains into the bilge ?
As for the trim motor replacement, i did one a couple of years ago and it was straight forward. Good photos of where the wires go is helpful as well as cleaning every wiring connection and applying a bit of dielectric grease when done. And if you need further help there is always our trim & tilt motor troubleshooter c/w drawings. |
Re: Tilt/trim eyesore.
Thanks for the quick reply. Took pictures as you had suggested. Read the troubleshoot before attempting anything! After install is complete, is bleeding the system as easy as moving the motor up and down a few times?

Re: Tilt/trim eyesore.
Its been a while since I was able to get onto this site from home for whatever reason. The trim motor has been all cleaned up and working fine. Will post pics if I can ever log in from home!
Been enjoying the summer boating and amazed at the comments and curiosity regarding my Mariah. Cheers! |
Re: Tilt/trim eyesore.
the water your talking about might be coming through the stern vents.
on my 182 the water comes of the cover and manages to pour in to the vents overwhelming the wells. its a design flaw I'd say because the vents are fitted with a down ward angle which doesn't allow heavy rainfall to flow back out of the vents but in to the bilge instead! I also had to change my trim motor bracket to a stainless because it was rusted to hell. cheers Lewy |
Re: Tilt/trim eyesore.
Water is possibly from rain or washing floor of boat but I don't think it's a big issue anymore. Siliconed the covers so limiting the amount of water going in. Only really an issue if you remove the covers to see dirty, smelly water!
