Two types of timing. First is initial at idle and the second is total timing. Total timing is the most important of the two due to its affect on optimal HP.

I personally utilize a digital timing light which does not require a timing tape to be installed on the harmonic balance. To set total timing it is just a matter of setting the needed advance value on the light and then adjusting the distrib until the balance mark is lined up with the 0 on the timing tab. Tighten down the hold down on the distrib and your done.

If you are using an inductive light, this will require the adding of an aftermarket timing tape to go beyond the timing marks found on the stock timing tab.

I believe the 5.7 merc uses a electronic advance module rather than a mechanical or vacuum. I believe the Mercruiser advance module provides around 24 degrees of advance BTDC.

For my application running Vortec heads I adjust to a maximum of 30 degrees at 3000 RPM. On non Vortec heads 32 to 34 could be range.

You can just stick with initial timing but if you want the best performance from your motor total timing is the way to go.

Sorry for going beyond the original post but just thought it was worth mentioning.

Thanks
